Cosby, Tennessee-- If you have a yearning for the Great Smoky Mountain
National Park the way it used to be without all the crowds of tourists,
perhaps a vacation in the Cosby and Newport area would be to your
liking. There you will find an official Great Smoky Mountain National
Park campground GSMNP, know as Cosby Campground. This Smoky Mountain
delight has 175 campsites, many of which go unused much of the time.
There are no hookups, but this campground does have restrooms and
is located close to a number of hiking trails. It is open from the
middle of April to October and is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
It is located at the at the northeastern corner of the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Located near the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park entrance is a lodge, a large
cabin if you will, that has accommodations for up to twenty.
The campground at Cosby is little used.
Due to the beauty and location of the campground near Newport and
Cosby, it is a little hard to understand why this wonderful campground
is so little used. Perhaps the low attendance at the campground at
Newport and Cosby can only be understood in the context of local lore
associated with these small towns nestled up to GSMNP. For instance,
both Newport and it's cousin town of Cosby, were once known for their
enthusiastic involvement in the moonshine industry during Prohibition.
Also, in the earliest years, Newport, TN had a reputation of lawlessness
as a center to the industry of flatboat navigation on the French Broad
River. Not so amazingly, Newports rather scrappy reputation lingers
on even today. However, colorful the history, of Cosby has refined
as it has become the county seat of Cocke County. Thousands of visitors
come to Cosby TN the first Sunday in May for the annual Ramp Festival.
Christy.
Much more flattering to the area of Newport and Cosby and in fact
all of Cocke County is the inspiring story of Christy. Christy is
the young schoolteacher who once was so devoted to teaching the children
of the Great Smoky Mountains that her story lives on even today. As
her service at the mountain mission school has been told to millions
via books and television. Let us hope that it is her legacy of this
region of the Smokies that will live on for years to come. Her charming
part in Smoky Mountain history took place in Cocke County at Cutter's
Gap near Del Rio.
