else. Get out of your cars and enjoy a sampling of the very best the
Smoky Mountains has to offer. "Must see" areas of the Park
include Cades Cove, Newfound Gap Road, Clingmans Dome, stretches of
the Appalachian Trail, Alum Cave Bluff to Mt. LeConte.
Cades Cove Loop Road - This one way, one lane road outlines
an open cove nestled in the park boundaries and connects a variety
of pioneer Gatlinburg Cabin Rental - Homes preserved in an open-air museum setting. Wildlife,
wildflowers and serene bucolic vistas help to set the stage for this
step back in time. Cades Cove is the most visited feature in the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park.
Newfound Gap Road - Drive across the middle of the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park and experience beauty unmatched. Newfound
Gap Road winds through 33 miles of forests and is punctuated by wildlife,
trail heads and waterfalls. It connects Gatlinburg, Tennessee with
Cherokee, North Carolina.
Clingmans Dome - High above all other peaks in the Smoky Mountains,
Clingman's dome gives the visitor an unparalleled view of the surrounding
national park. The trailhead leading to this feature is located roughly
mid-point in the park. Be aware that the trail is short, paved, but
steep, however, the view from the parking lot at the base of the trail
is worth seeing on it's own. To reach Clingman's Dome, travel Newfound
Gap Road to Clingman's Dome Road and follow the signs to the parking
lot and trail head.
Appalachian Trail - The Appalachian Trail leads 200 or so
hardy souls annually on solitary journeys from Maine to Georgia. Part
of the Appalachian Trail follows the crest of the mountains in the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park along the state borders of Georgia
and North Carolina. You can access the trail by several means while
visiting the Smokies, including traveling to the Newfound Gap parking
lot and following the signs to Charlies Bunion.
Alum Cave Bluff to Mt. LeConte - The Alum Cave Bluff trail
offers an avenue to Mount LeConte Lodge. It is popular due to its
outstanding vistas and deep treks into the mountainous forest. Depending
on your fitness level and pace, the round-trip hike to Mt. LeConte
Lodge takes about 3.5 hours.
